Mass Layoffs at Tech Giants: Reasons and Impact Analysis

Layoffs at Tech Giants

Script:

Tech giants Meta, Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft recently cut 50,000 jobs. Meanwhile, Twitter’s CEO, Elon Musk, fired half of the company’s employees last year. A recent analysis of the job cuts by 365 Data Science revealed some interesting facts.

"cuts might represent a winding-back of hiring policies"

The median time a recently laid-off employee had been in their role was roughly two years, indicating that these cuts might represent a winding-back of hiring policies put in place during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the median level of experience held by those who were laid off was 11.5 years, meaning that these cuts might not only be junior workers with little experience. The most affected roles were within HR, which accounted for 28% of all layoffs, with some functions being replaced by automation. Software engineers were most affected at Google and Twitter, while HR and talent sourcing were most affected at Microsoft and Meta. 56% of the staff who were laid off were female, which is a worrying statistic considering the tech industry's efforts to address the gender imbalance within the field.

Finally, only 10% of those laid off have listed a new job on their LinkedIn profiles, which may indicate long-term unemployment or a shift towards self-employment or the freelance gig economy. The job cuts might be a result of the tech giants expanding too quickly or innovations in AI and automation replacing people with machines.
